Paleo In a Nutshell: Exercise

This video, along with its Part 1 companion, have been making the rounds on CF blogs for a while.  I first found out about the videos from Robb Wolf, and most recently saw the two of them posted on CF One World.  Anyway, enough back story. 

At its very core, the video is a slick, short argument for keeping workouts brief and intense.  And if you train at CFO, you no doubt have experienced these types of workouts.  Intensity is one of the three tenets of CF workouts (functionality and variety being the other two).  What I like about the video is that it doesn't just emphasize exercise, but recovery from exercise.  Recovery is one of the most often overlooked components of sound training, and one of the most important.

i love the music and i really love short workouts...the shorter the better.

plenty of rest also sounds pretty good.  i'm going to have to cut back on my two a days.

I'm not much of a fan of long distance endurance events (don't hit me Stacy). However, I would bet the claims that running will shorten your life would hold up poorly to scrutiny. Shorter more intense workouts are probably more useful and better for you, but we humans certainly have the capacity to go long when they want to do so.

When guys like Art Devany (a rather outspoken Internet Paleo advocate) say that running causes cancer and try to "prove" it by pointing out that "At least four particiants of the Boston Marathon have died of brain cancer in the past 10 years," it just seems like they are grasping at straws. I think running marathons is unwise from an injury and training perspective, but doing some endurance work has its place. It just doesn't happen to have much of a place in my training at the moment.

I just received the results of my blood work/lipid panel.  I follow a paleo/zone combo because in my opinion, a girls gotta live!  Here are the results:

Cholesterol 213 (gasp! so high)

That running/cancer theory is retarded.

While my current incarnation is that of an uber distance athlete, I spent many years in the- blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-sport of springboard diving. As someone who has experienced the joys and benefits of both ends of the fitness spectrum, I have a real problem with any argument claiming that humans have evolved (or in the argument of the caveman, perhaps not evolved) to perform best in one way only.  This type of argument not only simplifies human experiences on the planet to experience(for instance where do the Polynesians, who had little access to animal protein, fit into this whole cave man concept? And what about women? Where do we fit in?), It also flies in the face of a quintessential characteristic of the human; namely the ability to manipulate our environments and then adapt to those manipulations through various means- often more manipulations.  Essentialist arguments can be very comforting, particularly  in times of social flux- but they most always lead down a path that is, at best, elitist, exclusionary, and insufficiently reflective. That said, I think anything that gets people to think consciously about what they eat and do, and how that makes them feel and perform, in a holistic embodied way, is good not just for the individual, but also for the society at large. If it’s paleo/zone for you- great. For me, however, it was endurance activity- I was a very successful gymnast and diver on a truly atrocious diet.  And even though I know you could not catch me tom, I won’t hit you, especially if you help me fend of the hoards of cavepeople I am sure to have ticked off.

 

since we don't live in the paleolithic era... why should we eat and exercise like them. Isn't the whole point to evolve? and how do we do that if we try and mimic stuff from 2+ million years ago? what do we accomplish by eating like people who didn't have a choice in what they ate or weren't really trying to exercise to begin with? viva pizza, fried chicken, and ultra marathons

I'll have you know that my current race toward incredible adiposity has made me Incredibly fast. When I say fast, I mean running Usain Bolt-esque 100m speeds for mile after mile. As you've seen, I dominate the hills on my bicycle. Absolutely dominate them.
