Foods for Whole Body Beauty

Let's face it, we all want to look good. Unfortunately, most beauty products on the market contain chemicals and synthetic ingredients that can be harmful to the body. A recent study found that even skin and hair products that claim to be "natural" and "organic" can be unsafe. So how can you attain a knock-out look without the use of beauty products? Look no further than your local grocery store. Nature provides us with an array of foods that are abundant with antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients that give you a youthful radiant body.

Beautifying Organic Foods

*Aloe Vera
*Hemp Seeds
*Cucumbers
*Onions
*Turmeric
*Macadamia Nuts
*Olives
*Coconut Oil
*Radishes
*Watercress
*Papaya

Papaya Enzyme Boost
Adapted from Sheila Lopipero, NE

Ingredients:
2 cups diced papaya (peeled & seeded)
1/2 cup diced pineapple
2 cups coconut water
2 tsp. vanilla extract
Juice from 1 lime
Pinch of salt

*Blend all of the ingredients in blender until smooth. Serves 2-4.

Papaya contains lots of enzymes that nourish the skin. The fruit is loaded with calcium, vitamin A and C. For this reason, many beauty products include papaya in their list of ingredients. But why buy these when you can reap the benefits of this beatifying fruit by simply eating it or putting it directly on your skin. Simply mash up a bit of fresh papaya (the less ripe ones have more enzymes) and slather on a thin layer on your face & neck. Let it dry. Rinse with warm water.

Aloe Vera Mask
Want an instant face lift? Try this. Fillet a small piece of aloe vera plant to expose the inner gel. Rub a thick layer of this gel over the face & neck. Lie down & relax. This mask may be applied right before bed and left on throughout the night. Rinse with warm water upon waking.

Peaceful Brown Rice Vinegar Bath
To relieve stressed and painful muscles, soak in a bath of warm water & 450 ml. of organic brown rice vinegar. This will help remove excess lactic acid from the sore muscles.

Topical Hair Mask
To add body & shine to your hair, indulge in a banana, coconut, and ginger mask. Mash one or two bananas. Add three teaspoons of organic coconut oil and one teaspoon of finely grated fresh organic ginger and mix. Cover your hair with the mask and leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse.

We think of man-made technology as being more sophisticated, but in reality it is nature that is inimitable...Many plant substances, because they are bio-identical to those in the body, have the amazing ability to balance our chemistry, whether we are deficient in--or have excess of--that substance. No synthetics can do this. -Kat, James The Truth About Beauty

Tomorrow's WOD (6/29/09)

As a 2-person team, Max Reps in 16 Minutes:

Row 250m
Front Squat @ 135#/95#
Power Clean @ 135#/95#

This workout will be done in 2-minute intervals (running clock). One person will start on the rower and will have to complete 250m before the other person can start front squats (or power cleans). This means that the amount of time will vary depending on how quickly the row gets done. So if one person gets done with the 250m row in 1:10, the other person will have 50 seconds to get as many front squats as possible in (2:00 - 1:10). After 2 minutes, rotate. Now the person who rowed will be doing front squats and the person doing front squats will move to the rower. Continue rotating through until the sixteen minutes is up (each person will end up doing 4 rows and 2 sets of each exercise).

Sounds pukie, but fun!

greetings from Hanoi -

Our room as a computer....so....hello

I think I'd enjoy teaming up with Funny Socks and have a go at this WOD vs Brian and Lee. Although Brain, bad hip and all, would smoke us on the rowing.

So, I miss the gang, but we're having a blast in Viet Nam. Had an interesting party starter last nite - a shot of liquor distilled from a cobra snake and a scorpian. Tasted like whiskey, 100proof, harsh like Jack Daniels, not smooth like Jameson.

Dude Brad,...

If I knew you were going to VN, I would've hooked up some phatty adventure tours for you and got you some killer deals at some of the resorts out there! Way to go for leaving me out of the loop! Hope you are having a great time...it's hot as heck out there right now...

Can't wait to hear stories when you get back! Be safe!

You know, I eat a lot of macadamia nuts and I am not getting any prettier...

Since I was away from a computer yesterday, I missed a few things. Fortunately, I am more than happy to waste time and digital storage responding to them today. SteveD wrote the following on yesterday's post regarding the rats:

How did they convince the one group of rats to paddle slowly and the other group to paddle swiftly? That's my question.

The weighted rats paddled swiftly. RTFA :)

I read the article and your explanation and find both insufficient to elucidate how they made those little rats do anything that involved paddling around in a pool of water. Putting a weight on me doesn't make me do anything faster. Just the opposite, in fact. If I weren't so lazy I might actually look up the primary source, but that assumes that I could actually translate whatever the researches said into English. Unlikely. I can barely do that with geology articles.

I assume that unweighted rats can keep from drowning by paddling slowly but weighted rats must paddle swiftly.

Brandon also said the following yesterday:

find an article that supports my position that "high bar" squats are far, far more effective in developing explosive/ dynamic movements - compared to the good morning / low bar squat.

While Gregg Everett does not make the argument that high bar squats will make you more explosive, he does make the argument that high bar squats are important in this article. Most Oly coaches would say high bar squats are the only ones worth doing as the increased demand they place on the quads is quite useful when trying to stand up from a full squat after you just caught a heavy clean.

However, to say that one squat or another will make you more explosive is probably not the best argument to have. Squats will make you strong and strength is a very important part of power production. However, squats are not the only variable in becoming more explosive.

I also don't understand why Brandon would advocate a high bar squat since he doesn't really do a high bar squat, yet is both very powerful and strong. Brandon's squat is something of a hybrid between the two versions. He carries the bar up high, but sits way back and inclines his torso like a low bar squat. His stance is even wider than the low bar variant and his grip on the bar also suggests the Starting Strength model. As a result, his knees don't travel forward like they would in a classic high bar squat, which makes the movement less quad dominant.

I have more to say about this, but will save it for later.

Mental note: Never ask Tom his opinion of squats.

Just in case it's not clear, I wish I could squat as much weight as Brandon.

Megan,do you belong to the rowing club? I am interested in finding an activity to do with Bennie.

tom
false modesty doesn't become you. you know you're getting prettier every day.

by the way, thanks for all your help with the squats last week.

Hi Lance. Yes, I am a member. Check out the programs section of the website for beginner classes. Get Bennie rowing in high school so he can land a full ride scholarship to college. Good plan!

Great post Connie! I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and a crossfit exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll apply an ice pack to my face. After I remove the ice pack I use an organic deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use an organic water activated gel cleanser, then an organic honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and since it's not organic it makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Hey Lau!
Maybe you can help me out. I've been having trouble with razor burn and bumps after I shave. I use a Mach 3 and Edge gel for sensitive skin, but my skin still gets irritated. Do you have any tips?

Lau: So THAT'S why you're so damn pretty and fun to look at.... Hahaha.. LOL! Speaking of your face...where's it been buddy? Haven't seen you in forever...
