CrossFit Oakland is proud to be a part this year's Berkeley Fire Department Academy in which eleven recruits have undergone rigorous physical training, comprehensive classroom work, as well as manipulative training with hoses, ladders, water supply, hazardous materials, wildland firefighting, emergency medical services, confined space operations, auto extrication, live fire training, rope rescue and Berkeley geography. The current Academy has trained for 11 weeks, and will graduate mid-December!

The new firefighter-paramedics remain on probation for 24 months before they become permanent employees of the City of Berkeley. During probation, the fire fighters must complete a 6-month, 12-month and 18-month examination.

Congrats to the 2008 BFD Academy to comments.

9a.m. class today may appreciate this from Spider chick on the affiliate blog main site:

Some gyms are for old ladies and kids. Some are for a tougher, wilder breed of man-beast. The language follows accordingly. Profanity isn't necessarily due to a lack of vocabulary, education or social privilege.

The question is: do you want to struggle out a brutal wod with Green Berets, or do you want to spin to Celine and then do lunch with the Junior League? Are you inspired by competing against Rugby players and UFC fighters? Or, do you find that you can clock your fastest Fran when you're challenged by a nursing mother? If you have the stones to play with the GBs, Rugby beasts or UFC monsters, then you probably don't cringe over words.

I go where the tough guys are, and we love a great snatch joke or well delivered F-Bomb. We don't venture into Chuck-e-Cheese, and expect that savvy parents won't bring their kids around our gym.

For the sake of honesty, let's acknowledge that those who can truly forge elite fitness are going to be a rough crowd. Some are born to it, some choose it. Whether or not they use profanity themselves, tough guys don't cover their ears and act mortally wounded when they hear a four letter word.

God love the foul mouthed, snatch-joking, tough guys, and keep them safe from the potty mouth police.

That being said, there may be more money in selling a program that is marketed as "forging elite fitness", and sorta looks like it's a tough guy friendly gym, but in actuality, it's a mommy-and-me-too fitness playground with gluten-free hand chalk, a diaper changing station made of recycled material, and a verbally correct wod that's fun for the whole lactose intolerant, peanut allergic family.

is there more money to be made in a politically, grammatically, mathematically, geographically, theologically, morally correct gym? Is it worth it?

I choose to eat meat, wear fur, workout in a bra, leave sweat angels on the floor, weave a foul mouthed tapestry of lyrical filth, and exercise until I occasionally vomit. And, I'm willing to pay for the privilege of doing so in a place where tough guys roam unfettered by those who sell Avon. If I see Coach Berg around, I hope he's wearing a snatch shirt.

Did Nabil's wife write this?

Ahh...what did I miss at the 9 am class?

I kinda like the junior league as long as I'm batting, but that aside, good job working with the Berkeley Fire!

B,

I think you missed out on winning a bet.

But I guess "Your Burpee Master," also known as MJJ, beat me to the punch.

what you missed at the 9am class-- p-hole, manwell and connor bringing sexy back!

Nicole - awesome post, thats pretty funny that she posted that today, considering all the fun we had. You know its a good day in the gym when a new nickname comes about and everyone is on the floor laughing. Journey, smile, we love you, it could have been a LOT worse... you held your own today with the boys and kicked my ass, thats for sure!

It is with great humility that I acknowledge defeat today.

I do feel, however, that I was at a distinct disadvantage because I had to do the WOD alone while being victimized by a sudden rule change to the work out. (not being allowed to drop the bar during the deadlift portion of the WOD) I should also mention that I was forced to run during a torrential down pour of biblical proportions. To top it off, each time I arrived back in the gym from the 400 meter run in 65 mph plus winds, I was subjected to PM Dawn's "Set Adrift on a Memory Bliss."

But, I refuse to make any excuse for my performance today.

B, just one question.....WWPBD??? At least you'll be able to brush up on your burpee skills!

Props to everyone who suffered through the wod yesterday...T, I find it interesting how you conveniently missed it - "CAAAKES" even came to represent so you have NO excuse!

Audge, one question for you...got wallballs??? I didn't think so!! How about we start a WWNCD (Nicole Carroll) campaign for you.

First off, Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Second, it's been a pleasure to train the recruits from BFD. Nicole and I are happy to have played a small role in their development.

We put them through FGB this past Tuesday. We first announced the FGB date three weeks ago, so that they'd have something on the calendar to look to, to train for. And they did great. We even had a legit, as rx'd 304 by one of the recruits, and he went to a 24" box (higher than the prescribed 20").

Finally, stay tuned for tonight's post on our new Team Workout format that we'll be piloting during tomorrow's Rest Day WOD!

Apparently the Zone diet isn't just for urbanites, hipsters and other like-minded individuals you may also enjoy the ironic coolness of gentrification.

Just a piece of an article taken from the Associated Press reporting on the terrorist attacks in Mumbai:
"The well-planned attacks began Wednesday night and officials said the gunmen were prepared, even carrying large bags of almonds to keep up their energy during the fight."

Why does Spider Chick think she can't use profanity around kids, nursing mothers, or the junior league, whatever the f**k that is.
